A Good Online Degree Program Is Hard to Find?

It was not that long ago that earning a degree online did not give you much academic credibility. But these days with advance technology and sophisticated digital instruction methods, going to school online holds more clout than it used to. More and more institutions of higher education are offering a wide range of undergraduate and graduate degree programs. While you are looking for the right program for you, remember if a program sounds too good, or too easy, to be true, it probably is. If you want to separate the good online degree programs from the bad ones, you are going to want to check for a few things.

First, it’s important to check a college’s accreditation status. For program to be worth both your time and money it needs to meet certain academic standards through an accreditation association. These types of associations evaluate degree programs to determine whether or not curriculum and training methods fulfill predetermined criteria. In the United States higher education programs are either accredited by regionally accrediting bodies or national accrediting bodies. Regional accrediting associations usually accredit schools that are academically oriented and grant associate, bachelor’s or master’s degrees. National accrediting associations usually accredit schools that have career, technical, or vocational programs, and grant diplomas and certifications. Many schools will claim to be accredited by an association, but not all of these associations are credible. It’s important to check a school’s accreditation status and make sure that the accrediting association is regionally or nationally recognized.

Second, it’s important to learn about the school’s academic reputation. While a having your name on a college diploma is of great value, the name of the school that is on that diploma also holds a good amount of weight. You are going to want to make sure that the institution you receive an education through has a respectable reputation. If the point of earning a degree is so that you can get a good job, you want to make sure that you are employable. Typically, employers spend only a few minutes looking over your resume, and you want to make sure something on it catches their eye. Colleges that have a positive academic reputation are more likely to be recognized by potential employers. And since you are going to put a lot of hard work and effort into earning an education, you don’t want a recruiter to look you over because you got a degree from a school with a bad reputation.

Third, it’s important to consider admissions requirements. You should be very cautious of a school that automatically accepts students and does not require them to submit application materials. Admissions requirements can differ depending on the school and program and some may be more difficult to gain acceptance to than others. While some schools have fairly simple requirements, such as minimum GPA or high school diploma, others may ask for you to submit more detailed information like test scores and recommendation letters. A school that accepts anyone and everyone is probably more about making money and less about academics. Remember, no one buys a college degree, they earn it. A program that is charging you a lot of money but not making you complete a lot of coursework to earn a degree probably isn’t going to result in a legitimate education. If an online degree program has set requirements that applicants must meet before they can enroll in classes, it is more likely to give you what you are actually paying for, which is not just a piece of paper.

Very nice article to help people understand a bit more about the online education available as well as some of the dangers to look out for with fraud program scams. I think it’s very important that everyone first conducts lots of research on an educational program they come across to make sure that it’s not only legitimate, but accredited.

I’ve seen an influx over the last few years of certification & degree scam programs. And you were absolutely correct about checking to make sure they are asking for past academic information as well as a complete application process that doesn’t just approve anyone.

  • I don’t think it’s difficult to find any online school now. At first, I really have second thoughts on enrolling myself in online schools that are offered on the Internet. However, last year, I took the courage in enrolling myself at Poynter University where I took some class about Online Journalism, Math for Journalists and 3 more courses. The instruction method was really great that they have this monitoring system where student and teachers get the chance to talk about the class. I even got a report card for all of it which are sent via email at the end of each term. However, there’s always this warning to those who would like to have online courses, make sure it is for real and that it is credible.

  • This new trend of online education is very fast and useful. Thanku verymuch.
